Garden Explorers Gardening Program for Childcare Centres in Sydney

Early childhood is where lifelong environmental habits begin.

The Garden Explorers Program is a structured five week sustainability journey designed specifically for Sydney childcare centres. It helps preschool children develop a practical understanding of plants, insects, composting, and caring for the environment through consistent weekly learning and responsibility.

Unlike a typical gardening incursion, Garden Explorers is developmental. Each week builds on the last, reinforcing knowledge and encouraging children to observe, care for, and take ownership of their centre’s garden space.

Why Our Gardening Program for Childcare Centres in Sydney Works

Many childcare gardening programs introduce planting once and move on.

Garden Explorers is different.

Children do not just plant something and leave it. They learn how to care for it. They return to it. They observe it. They take responsibility for it.

This ongoing engagement supports EYLF sustainability outcomes, responsibility and teamwork, sensory development, scientific thinking and observation, and emotional regulation through connection to nature.

The program integrates naturally into daily centre routines and requires minimal preparation from educators.

High engagement. Hands in soil. Active learning.

How the Garden Explorers Program Flows

Each week introduces a new focus while reinforcing previous skills and knowledge.

Week 1 Caring for Plants

Children learn the parts of a plant, how to check soil moisture, and when and how to water correctly.

Weekly taskChildren help check the soil, feel for dryness, and decide when watering is needed.

This builds early responsibility and observation skills.

Week 2 Bugs in the Garden

Children learn the difference between helpful and harmful insects, how insects affect plant health, and basic ecosystem balance.

Weekly taskChildren search for insects or signs of bug damage and report findings to educators.

This introduces early scientific thinking and environmental awareness.

Week 3 Sensory Edible Plants

Children explore edible plants using touch and smell while learning basic planting techniques. Planting is included during this session.

Weekly taskChildren observe growth, smell leaves, and help care for edible plants throughout the week.

This supports sensory learning and connection to food origins.

Week 4 Bush Tucker and Caring for Country

Children learn about native Australian plants, traditional Aboriginal uses of bush tucker, and the importance of caring for Country. Planting is included during this session.

Weekly taskChildren observe bush tucker plants and participate in respectful watering and care.

This supports cultural awareness and sustainability education in line with early childhood learning principles.

Structured learning moment.

Week 5 Composting and Worms

Children learn how food scraps break down, how worms create healthy soil, and why reducing waste is important.

Weekly taskChildren practise sorting food scraps and maintaining sustainable garden habits.

This builds understanding of recycling and environmental cycles.

Ongoing Learning Between Sessions

What makes Garden Explorers unique is that learning continues between visits.

Each week includes simple, age appropriate tasks that allow children to check plant health, observe growth changes, identify insects, and care for soil and garden beds.

The garden becomes an active learning space rather than a passive display.

Completion and Recognition

At the end of the five week journey, each child receives a Garden Explorers Completion Certificate recognising their participation and learning across the program.

This reinforces achievement and pride in caring for the environment.

Flexible Entry for Sydney Childcare Centres

Centres may begin with a single Garden Explorers incursion.

If your centre chooses to transition into the full five week program, the amount paid for the initial session will be deducted from the total program fee. This makes it simple to continue the complete learning journey.

Supporting Sustainability in Sydney Early Learning Centres

Garden Explorers is structured, developmental, and aligned with early childhood sustainability goals. It is designed specifically for preschool aged children and is easy for educators to integrate into existing routines.

For Sydney childcare centres looking to strengthen sustainability practices through meaningful hands on learning, Garden Explorers provides a clear and practical pathway.
